What did Mary know?

During Sunday’s service (6th) Mike referenced the song, 'Mary did you know' . It's a lovely song with interesting lyrics. We can't include it in our YouTube service because of copyright, so thought we'd share it here (its legal because we’re using their official code).

Such thought provoking lyrics, for example "Mary did you know.... this child that you delivered, will soon deliver you" and

"Did you know that your baby boy Has walked where angels trod? When you kiss your little baby You kiss the face of God"

The author of the lyrics, Mark Lowry, said in an interview about writing the song:

“I started thinking and wondering if Mary realized the power, authority and majesty that she cradled in her arms that first Christmas. I wondered if she realized those little hands were the same hands that scooped out oceans and formed rivers. I just tried to put into words the unfathomable. I started thinking of the questions I would have for her if I were to sit down & have coffee with Mary. You know, "What was it like raising God?" "What did you know?" "What didn't you know?"

To answer some of these questions, follow what Mike says at our service on our Youtube channel, or read what the angel told Mary (Luke 1: 30-5):

But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favour with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[a] the Son of God.

Mary’s response to the angel (V38):

‘I am the Lord’s servant,’ Mary answered. ‘May your word to me be fulfilled.’

Then you can also see Mary’s how Mary was feeling about all this, because we have Mary’s song from when she visited her cousin Elizabeth, while she was pregnant (Luke 1:46-55):

Oh, how my soul praises the Lord.

How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!

or he took notice of his lowly servant girl,

and from now on all generations will call me blessed.

For the Mighty One is holy,

and he has done great things for me.
